Monthly Weird Facts

During the composition of various works of historical fiction I run across some rather interesting tidbits of history.  Also, in researching some non-fiction projects, or just fiddling around as a generalist like myself is want to do, I encounter strange things in the historical record. Everything on this page is true, alleged true at the source, both, or a mixture of all the stuff that adds up to the human story, excluding straight fiction.

Like "A Sampler" section, I shall make a "weird fact" post each month.  I begin with September.  Comments?  Just send me an e-mail.

OCTOBER, 2008

In the year 776 A.D. a red cross was seen in the sky after sunset, while on the same year strange adders were seen in Sussex. (note: order of events not given, iw)

    Anglo-Saxon Chronicles

SEPTEMBER, 2008

793 A.D., Northumbria (England)

"In this year terrible portents appeared over Northumbria and miserably frightened the inhabitants: These were exceptional flashes of lightening and fiery dragons were seen flying through the air."

  Anglo-Saxon Chronicles.
